Solidarity Event against Island Timberlands

On Saturday February 25th, Occupy Nanaimo will be joining in Solidarity to protest against Island Timberlands plans to log Cortes Island. We are joining in this protest with Occupy Powell River and Occupy Vancouver, who will be holding 24 hour occupations against Island Timberlands plan to clear cut the Beautiful forests of Cortes Island. For those that aren’t aware, Island Timberlands is owned by Brookfield Asset Management. Brookfield Asset Management also owns Zuccotti Park, aptly renamed “Liberty Park” by Occupy Wall-St, the Heart of the Occupy Movement and the Location of their September 17th Occupation.

After members of Occupy Vancouver/Powell River went to New York to meet up with Occupy Wall St.  to present a petition against the gross logging plans. This petition has since travelled across the sea to; London, England; Hong Kong, China; Down to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; and also Toronto, Ontario and  here at home in Nanaimo BC. The goal of this petition, which was presented to Brookfield Asset Management buildings directly, is to encourage them to cease their campaign to log the old growth forests on Cortes Island.

We, of Occupy Nanaimo, will meet at DKP at 11am and march to I.T. offices where a 24hour vigil will be held in honour of the old growth forest of Cortes. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to show up and support any time during the 24hours…This is our chance to stand up for our right as the people of British Columbia not to lose some of the last of the remaining percentage of old growth forest left in Canada. We demand respectful and responsible handling of our precious natural resources, so again we ask you to please join if you can!!

Occupy the Holidays

This is something everyone can do…

A bunch of these posters have been printed and are available for distribution. Email ShowEmail to find out where you can pick some up. You can also download the flyer and print your own. The idea is to plaster these in the malls, chain stores, banks, ATMs – get creative. This can be done individually or in groups. You can sneak them into the stalls in the bathrooms and change rooms or plaster them on the walls and doors of the building with everyone watching. You could even take pictures when you post them and share them on the facebook page. Please do not to put them on car windshields as they get thrown on the ground and create a mess – we don’t want that to be our holiday message. A big thank you to Nicole for the graphic design and Dani at Print Three for the printing.

The Art of Revolution

The Occupy Movement has generated an extraordinary amount of creative output from filmmakers, writers, musicians and artists. Occuprint is an online gallery dedicated to collecting and sharing some of the best poster designs inspired by the movement.

Saturday Dec. 10th: Write for Rights

People across Canada and around the world are getting ready to mark Human Rights Day by taking part in Amnesty International’s worldwide WRITE FOR RIGHTS campaign. Occupy Nanaimo invites the community to join us as we write for human rights at the Vancouver Island Regional Library, Nanaimo Harbourfront branch on Saturday Dec. 10th from 1:30 to 4:30pm.

Incite Insight

With the coordinated West Coast Port Blockade just days away, here’s some inspiration from Occupy Love featuring spoken word artist Drew Dellinger. This video was filmed during the Occupy Oakland General Strike on Nov. 2nd when tens of thousands gathered and successfully shutdown the Port of Oakland.

We came to incite insight,
unite and discuss this.
We came to hang, and to bang the drums of justice.
Let’s occupy with our love and our light.

Occupy the Arts

Local artists Karen Birch and Dyane Brown are taking part in the annual Nanaimo Art Walk December 3rd and 4th, 11 am to 5pm. They are working on projects honouring Occupy Nanaimo which will be part of their studio exhibition. They are planning an ” Occupy The Studio” focus from 11-12 each day where they will be actively painting. Everyone is encouraged to come to 87 Nicol Street, the Arbutus Books and Art Studio and check things out!

Show Your Solidarity

Posted by Sarah Schmidt on Wednesday evening:

Occupy Nanaimo is asking that people come to the plaza whenever they have some spare time tomorrow (Thursday Dec 1), starting well before the 9:00am deadline and whenever you can throughout the day. The City is expected to start ticketing and removing all unoccupied tents any time after 9. Please show the campers that they are not alone – I imagine that this is a scary time for them – they have been on the front line for a long time now representing us. It is time for us to show us they are not alone. There were 500 people in the plaza the first day – we need you now. We are asking that you come to show support and bear witness.
