Occupy Nanaimo

Today was the great day I actually do something on the website – that is, submit it to google for adding to their vast index. I also took the liberty of adding analytics code, which allows us to track the site for pageviews, and overall hits on the site. So far we’ve have over 1,400 unique visits, with over 7,000 pageviews!  That’s great! We’re making ground, as the other occupy sites have, and will only continue to grow. On another note, I have enabled a small ad component in the sidebar to make some form of revenue. Now before it gets beefed about, I want to justify my cause – I pay nothing to my friend for the server he graciously let’s me abuse, and feel that if we can generate any money, he deserves it. If anyone has objections to this, please bring it to my attention.

Just thought I should let people know about the changes, seeing as how this is the category for said items.

• There is a new banner at the top ^^^ just in case it wasn’t obvious enough, courtesy of Laurie.
• Changed the front page to only display content in the Events category so as to better integrate and get Nanaimo’s message across, rather than the rest of the world. (That news is still available under the Occupy News page.)
• Working on getting a nice contact form setup so people can email the working groups right from the website.

That’s all for now though; got a lot of stuff going on, and we each can only do so much. Thank you to all who have/are helping; we greatly appreciate the help with the website for everyone!

It has come to my attention that OUR NEW AND IMPROVED WEBSITE THAT I HAVE TO TYPE ABOUT IN CAPS BECAUSE IT IS AWESOMER AND MORE EASY TO USER FRIENDLY BAD ENGLISH IS UP! (coffee is fun) I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused, having a weeks delay before a usable site was up, but at least we’re here now. Guarantee this is a lot easier to use and edit than the old one, and even though it might not look as good, it has functionality and similarity to that of the other occupy sites.

You will have to re-register again, I’m sorry, but after that there will be no more registering – until I get a decent forum back up. I will be posting a tutorial video (don’t worry it’s short) on how/where to be posting things, so no worries. If you mess something up, I can always revert it, or perform a restore. And as always, it’s still a work in progress. Or Beta, as we web people like to call it.

Dear OccupyNanaimo,

I know there has been much confusion about who/what/where/when/how our online presence is going to come about. Let me clarify this: occupynanaimo.ca will be our official site, and we will have a forum board, as well as a photo gallery of sorts, and maybe even dancing faeries.
The reality of the situation though is that most of you probably have questioned the stability of the imbecile who offered to run the website, yours truly. See, he doesn’t get enough sleep. Nor does he prioritize anything away from work. Nor is he ever on time. But I digress.

The point is I am switching this main site over from the drupal management system (which many of you I’m sure have no idea what that is) to something a little more familiar – wordpress. Basically if you can use Microsoft Word (pointing fingers at a few people here ) you’re good to go. The other reason is because many fellow Occupiers, occupyvictoria, occupytogether, etc, are using wordpress, so it only figures to make sense having the same system. (Ryan had a wonderful idea of merging his site and this one, so I think that’s the way we’ll go.)

Please bear with me, for I promise you (uh-oh) we will have a duplicate site of OccupyVictoria.ca, but for Nanaimo. Hopefully (with everyone’s help, and the magical faeries ) we can make use of a better, easier system. If not, I guess I’ll just have to drop off a vast container of food, proclaim failure, and call it a day – but I really don’t want it to come to that – want to help!
