BC Teachers Day of Action
As you have likely heard, legislation is expected regarding the BC Teacher’s Federation collective agreement on Monday or soon after.
BCTF is calling for mediation and, if necessary, binding arbitration instead of legislation.
They will hold rallies around BC on Monday and we hope to show the government that the teacher’s have broad support.
If you support the BCTF and not forced legislation by the government (also their employers, which is a major conflict of interest obviously) then show them your support and head to Bowen Road in front of the Beban Recreational Centre today at 3:30pm. Bring signs if you can but more importantly bring yourself and show your support for our teachers. In solidarity.
Tonight’s General Assembly
Don’t forget our General Assembly will be at the Dancing Goat tonight at 6pm in downtown Nanaimo. Come on down and get involved! If there are no goats…or dancing…then relax and have a coffee while supporting small business instead. Hope to see you there!
Solidarity Event against Island Timberlands
On Saturday February 25th, Occupy Nanaimo will be joining in Solidarity to protest against Island Timberlands plans to log Cortes Island. We are joining in this protest with Occupy Powell River and Occupy Vancouver, who will be holding 24 hour occupations against Island Timberlands plan to clear cut the Beautiful forests of Cortes Island. For those that aren’t aware, Island Timberlands is owned by Brookfield Asset Management. Brookfield Asset Management also owns Zuccotti Park, aptly renamed “Liberty Park” by Occupy Wall-St, the Heart of the Occupy Movement and the Location of their September 17th Occupation.
After members of Occupy Vancouver/Powell River went to New York to meet up with Occupy Wall St. to present a petition against the gross logging plans. This petition has since travelled across the sea to; London, England; Hong Kong, China; Down to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; and also Toronto, Ontario and here at home in Nanaimo BC. The goal of this petition, which was presented to Brookfield Asset Management buildings directly, is to encourage them to cease their campaign to log the old growth forests on Cortes Island.
We, of Occupy Nanaimo, will meet at DKP at 11am and march to I.T. offices where a 24hour vigil will be held in honour of the old growth forest of Cortes. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to show up and support any time during the 24hours…This is our chance to stand up for our right as the people of British Columbia not to lose some of the last of the remaining percentage of old growth forest left in Canada. We demand respectful and responsible handling of our precious natural resources, so again we ask you to please join if you can!!
What: March and 24 hour Vigil in solidarity against Island Timberlands
When: Saturday February 25th 2012 @ 11:00 am-12:00pm Sunday February 26th
Where: Meet @ Diana Krall Plaza at 11:00 then March to Island Timberlands for 24 hr Vigil
Why: To exert our right as citizens of BC to demand the preservations of the old growth forests on Cortes Island
Don’t forget to vote on our new poll!
Do you believe Island Timberlands should halt their plans to log Cortes Island
- Yes (72%, 26 Votes)
- No (28%, 10 Votes)
Total Voters: 36

Important City Council Meeting Tonight
Tonight Randy Churchill, Bylaws Manager for the City of Nanaimo, will report to City Council the “final costs” incurred by the city as a result of our occupation of Diana Krall Plaza. The final cost, according to the city, is just over $24,000 and includes almost $19,000 in legal costs. The City Report also notes that it is difficult to put a “price tag on the damage to the image of our downtown and lost opportunities resulting in Occupy Nanaimo”. We ask that if you are able to attend the City Council meeting tonight please do. It is at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, Shaw Auditorium tonight at 7pm. There will be delegations speaking in support of Occupy Nanaimo and people are encouraged to prepare questions to ask council themselves about these costs during Question Period. If you cannot attend, you can watch online on their website or on Shaw TV if you have Shaw Cable. In solidarity.
